Reference Product Blueprints: Template Any Listing
How to use an existing Shopify product as a visual template to standardize gallery order, variant swatches, and theme settings across bulk imports.
When importing products in bulk, maintaining a consistent presentation across your store is key: matching photography angles, uniform swatch setups, and identical option hierarchies.
Fillman provides the Universal Reference Product Blueprint to replicate your ideal product configuration across hundreds of newly imported listings automatically.
What is a Reference Product?
A Reference Product (or “Golden Sample”) is an existing listing in your Shopify store configured with your preferred layout. When selected during import, Fillman uses it as a template:
- Gallery Sequence: Replicates the exact photo sequence (e.g. Slot 1: Front hero, Slot 2: Back, Slot 3: Model, Slot 4: Dimensions).
- Option Hierarchy: Matches the ranking of options (e.g. Color first, Size second).
- Variant Swatch Matching: Connects variant swatches to their corresponding photography automatically.
- Theme Swatch Metafields: Automatically synchronizes custom theme metafields (such as
theme.group_media_objfor themes like Athora or Nuxio) so thumbnail filtering works out of the box.
How to Use a Reference Product
- Configure Your Golden Sample: Set up one model product in Shopify Admin with your desired photo sequence and variant image assignments.
- Select the Blueprint in Fillman: In Step 3 (Gallery & Catalog Settings), choose your model product from the Reference Blueprint dropdown.
- Run Your Import: Drop your spreadsheet and image folder. Fillman applies your Golden Sample’s gallery order and swatch setup across all imported products.
Importing Multi-Category Catalogs (Visual Mapping Presets)
Creating a Reference Product is ideal when importing collections of similar items (e.g. 500 apparel listings or 200 phone cases).
When importing diverse catalogs with mixed product categories (e.g. apparel, footwear, and home goods in a single supplier feed) or when you prefer not to create a template product:
- Visual Field Mapping: Use Fillman’s drag-and-drop column selector in Step 1 to map your supplier spreadsheet headers directly to Shopify fields (Title, Description, SKU, Price, Compare-at Price, Option Values, Tags).
- Save as Reusable Preset: Click Save as Import Preset and name your configuration (e.g. Supplier X Feed Preset).
- One-Click Recurring Imports: The next time you receive an updated feed from that supplier, select your saved preset to map all columns and options instantly without manual configuration.
